With the scorching temperatures, one business in particular seems to be staying pretty busy as homeowners try to do all they can to beat the heat.

Betsy Kennan knew something just wasn't right with her air conditioning.

"Early yesterday afternoon, and we realized that it was sending out primarily, it was air, but it was slightly cool," said Kennan.

It turns out one of her a/c units did need fixing, something that seems to be a problem for quite a number of area homeowners lately.

"It has been busier. Yes, it has picked up since this heat wave hit again. Each time we get a heat wave we definitely see an increase in business," said service technician with Mack Morris, Harry Chapman.

Chapman says on average, calls over the past few weeks have about doubled. He adds, however, that it's to be expected with these hot, humid conditions.

"You're going to see this when these temperatures get up high like this. Units are going to fail," said Chapman.

The heat apparently puts more stress on the home and the a/c unit. It can also lead to power surges which can cause some of the problems service technicians typically see. The scorching temperatures are the reason Kennan was not wasting any time getting her unit back to pumping out cool air.

"I grew up in Washington, DC without air conditioning, and so I'm aware of how hot it can get's bad, it's dangerous," she said.

According to Chapman, he doesn't see it letting up over the years.

"I think we're going to see more and more as it goes on and I've been in this business a long time and I have steadily seen an increasing trend in the air conditioning and the taxing and demand on air conditioners," said Chapman.

Experts suggest if you think you may have a problem with your a/c you should first check your air filters to make sure they're clean and also check the circuit breakers.
