A fire burned throughout the morning at a lumber processing yard on Three Notch'd Road in the heart of downtown Crozet, before it was extinguished. Firefighters were able to protect most of the surrounding structures.
"With any tall structure we leave what we call a collapse zone just in case. So people and equipment are outside of that," explained Bob Larsen of the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department.
When firefighters arrive at the J. Bruce Barnes Lumber Company, the silos tower had flames coming out of it. They spread to the structure below and a truck's trailer inside. Both the tower and trailer were full of sawdust, which fueled the flames.
"Certainly it's under investigation for a source of origin," said Larsen.
Officials have not yet determined a cause, but say the scene does not appear to be suspicious.
