Route 29 is a major part of the transportation network in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation is working on a blue print of what the road should look like in the future.

Who better to ask about the problems with Route 29 than the people who live near it or use it? That's who VDOT is hoping to hear from as they create a road map of the future of the 29 corridor.

Spokesman Lou Hatter says, "We recognize that the people who live along this corridor have a lot of insight into their local needs."

So they are traveling Route 29, holding public meetings along the way to talk to you. Monday they stopped in Albemarle County.

Tracie Taylor, who drives Route 29 daily, says, "It’s just really congested, two and from work usually I see an accident every day."

VDOT says just based on traffic congestion alone the intersection around Route 29 and Hydraulic is one they want to focus on.

VDOT officials say more than 50,000 cars use Route 29 north of Charlottesville every day.

More cars, means more traffic, and likely more accidents.

Hatter says, "It takes longer to get from place to place along the corridor because of those increasing traffic volumes."

So VDOT and the Department of Rail and Transportation need to hear from you about your issues with the 29 corridor.

Taylor adds, "The congestion if they could do something about the congestion ...widen it...that would help a lot."

According to VDOT, Route 29 is more than 1,000 miles long from end to end. They add they're not only focusing on traffic from cars. They are also looking to improve rail movement along the corridor.

There is a meeting February 11 in Madison County at the Volunteer Fire Department. Thursday, February 12, there will be a meeting at the Daniel Technology Center Germanna Community College in Culpeper. Monday, February 16, there is a meeting at the Warrenton Community Center. All meetings start at four in the afternoon.
