Thomas Jefferson is looking for more visitors to his mountain top estate. Tourism numbers are down at Monticello this year, and for several years, and now officials are targeting the Washington, D.C. population with an advertising campaign. Monticello officials think this campaign will help not only Thomas Jefferson's stomping ground but many area tourist destinations.
"Instead of just saying come to visit Monticello, we're saying with our partners, the wineries and the hotels, come and visit Charlottesville for a weekend," said Keith Johnstone, Vice President for Business and Administration at Monticello.
Monticello averaged about 500,000 visitors a year from 1981 to 2001, but only got about 450,000 last year.
