An Albemarle County family escaped their burning home after it was struck by lightning Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews say the family was inside their home at 3945 Williams Court, in the area of Ivy, when it was struck by lightning. The lightning strike sparked a fire on the roof. The family called police around 4pm Sunday with reports of smoke and flames in the attic.
Luckily, everyone was able to evacuate the house safely and there was no major damage inside or outside the house.
"This is the beginning of the thunderstorm season, so we ask everyone to be vigilant and just be aware of when a storm comes through. Also, don't hesitate to call 911 if you feel your house has been struck by lightning," said Albemarle County Fire Chief, Dan Eggleston.
Fire crews responded from Albemarle, Charlottesville, Crozet, and Earlysville to battle that fire.
