After nearly three decades, Louisa County residents have a brand new department store.
Peebles held its grand opening on Thursday and more than 100 customers and county leaders were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
The Peebles is more than just a new convenient place to shop. The new department store is also bringing jobs.
In a time when so many businesses are closing, Louisa County leaders say it's bringing hope back into the community.
Betty Claveloux lives in Louisa and until Thursday did most of her clothing shopping out of town.
“Right here in Louisa very limited. You have your hardware stores, your dollar store, but if you need to buy any nice gifts or nice clothing you either had to go to Short Pump or to Fredericksburg,” said Claveloux.
Claveloux says having the new Peebles in town will save her travel time and there will be more time for shopping.
“Here we can dash in we haven't wasted two hours on the road and just come and do the shopping and the selection is just wonderful,” said, Claveloux
Peebles is more than just a convenience. Louisa County Administrator Dale Mullen is hopeful this addition will start a trend of new businesses in the area.
”I think always when you get a solid anchor like Peebles a name that people know a name that people trust a name associated with quality for Virginia families in rural areas. It always tends to attract other businesses…so we're very excited."
Not only will this Peebles provide shopping opportunities in Louisa, the county administrator says it will also add more than a dozen new jobs.
CBS19 talked to some small business owners in Louisa. They shared their concerns about Peebles hurting their business.
Some are worried that the new department store will put them out of business, while others say they don't expect to feel the impact.
Peebles is located in the Glen Mayre shopping center in Louisa County.
