The United States hit the 300 million mark at 7:46 a.m. Tuesday morning. The U.S. Census Bureau predicts there is a new American every 11 seconds. They continue there is a birth every 7 seconds and a death every 13 seconds. Immigration is also a facts, with a new immigrant every 31 seconds.
This results in 2.8 million new people in the country every year with less than a 1 percent growth rate. About 40 percent of the growth is from immigration. The large amount of immigrants, may have the government downplaying this milestone.
For the 200 million mark, which was 39 years ago, President Johnson held a news conference to speak on past achievements and the challenges ahead, but there is not much planned this year. That is probably because of the hot button issue illegal immigrants. The census estimates there are between 11 and 12 million living in the US.
