A rainy day did not keep firefighters free from their job of putting out fires.
Crews with the North Garden Fire Department worked a barn fire in the 3900 block of Thomas Dairy Lane around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Firefighters were able to save the barn, but the 12 bales of hay inside the barn were lost.
The rain did help keep the barn from burning to the ground, but did not play a factor in keeping the hay from burning.
"It's very difficult when you are dealing with round bales of hay because they are designed as to where they repel water. The only way you can put a deep-seeded fire out it within that is to literally unroll it, and it takes an extremely large amount of water to extinguish the fire," said North Garden Fire Chief George Stephens.
There were no animals, or people hurt in the fire.
