A Buford Middle School student has been suspended for bringing a BB gun to school. The 12-year-old student is now in the custody of his parents.
Charlottesville Police say around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday someone in the school told the principal that a student was carrying a weapon. The principal confronted the student and the BB gun was turned over to the school resource officer.
"Why the young person chose to bring the item into the school we have some ideas. They are not situations that we can discuss at this point but the rationale behind it is something we are still investigating and looking into, to see whether it has any real merit to it or not," said Chief Tim Longo, of the Charlottesville Police Department.
In most situations the student would be charged with possession of a firearm on school property and be put through the juvenile justice system.
However, this case is different. According to police he is not facing criminal charges. Since he doesn't have a prior record, the authorities want to rehabilitate him. The student has agreed to mandatory counseling.
