No Major Traffic Tie-Ups

A home game at Scott Stadium and Disney on Ice at the John Paul Jones Arena. Two big events at two big venues only a few miles apart Thursday night caused some people to take to the sidewalks instead of the roadways.

"[It's] rush-hour, five o'clock, football game, stadium lots open two hours before the game, and Disney on Ice here at the JPJ, so I just parked at the hospital garage and figured we'd walk," said Joe Dennie, a UVA fan walking along Emmet Street to Thursday night's game.

Overall traffic wasn't all that bad. Near the JPJ Arena traffic moved smoothly for most of the evening, even through rush hour.

Some people weren't taking any chances, so they walked.

"I'd like to say it was because of my health," joked Bob Wallace, who was walking to get dinner, instead of driving, "but I came from north of town on 29 and it was such a tie-up."

That traffic may not have made its was all the way down Route 29. Management at JPJ said patrons there didn't seem to have much to complain about.

"No issues getting in, other than normal football traffic, which everyone expected, but it's been pretty quiet around our building for people, which is what people like," said Larry Wilson, the General Manager at the arena.

As for parking, JPJ lots that usually fill with fans headed to games at the stadium, were reserved for Disney on Ice ticket holders.

Wilson said that really wasn't an issue since for the last three football season's the parking lot hadn't been there and was under construction.

All in all, some very good news on a night when drivers could have had it much worse.
