Cash counts in the closing days before the Nov. 7 election and Webb is making progress.
During the first few weeks of this month Democrat Jim Webb raised nearly twice as much money as U.S. Senator George Allen, though the incumbent Republican reported more cash overall.
Reports show Webb collected more than $1.5 million, while Allen brought in less than $900,000.
"The national party is throwing a lot of money into Virginia; they are putting a lot of spotlight on Virginia because they think they have a real chance to beat George Allen, which I don't think anybody thought was the case 6 months ago," said Sean O'Brien, of the Sorensen Institute.
The Democrats need to win at least 6 seats to take control of the U.S. Senate.
