Local elected officials and other well-known members of the Charlottesville community helped celebrate 'Head Start Awareness Month' on Monday.

All were able to read, draw, and do other activities with students in Monticello Area Community Action Agency's Head Start program.

The national head start program is only 40 years old. Eighty-percent of its costs are taken care of by the federal government. Our local program just got a little help with paying the rest.

"The $5,000 grant from Wachovia is very important to us. We have received a 1% budget cut from the federal government which takes $15,000 away from our program, and we've yet to meet our requirements of serving 213 children," said Director of MACAA's Head Start program Cynthia Bayless.

The toddlers were also able to play a little basketball with the University of Virginia basketball teams.
