The Charlottesville City Council has voted 5 to nothing to oppose amendment 1 on the ballot.
If passed, the so-called marriage amendment would add to the state constitution, a ban on gay marriage in the commonwealth.
Same sex marriages are already prohibited by law. The resolution by the council merely urges residents of Charlottesville to vote against the amendment at the polls.
