Republicans at Club Rio in Albemarle County celebrated an early victory in the 5th congressional district this election night...while keeping a close eye on the senate race.

Soon after the polls closed, Republicans called the race for incumbent Virgil Goode, running against democrat Al Weed. Unofficial results show that 59% of the voters chose Goode to Weed's 40%. Independent Joseph Oddo received about 1% of the vote.

Goode celebrated early in Rocky Mount, thanking his volunteers that helped get out the vote.

However, Goode's victorious margin is smaller than his previous run against Weed, where Goode pulled in 64% of the votes, to Weed's 36%.

The Weed camp can attribute this smaller gap to better name recognition and the public's general distaste of Republican handling of the war in Iraq.

Keith Drake, chair of the Albemarle County Republicans would agree with this...citing that Republicans have lost votes over the war in Iraq, but that it's better to fight the war on terror over there, than here on our own soil.

This will be Goode's sixth term as Virginia's 5th district congressman.
