It's not really a strengthening class nor is it cardiovascular, instead it focuses on movement and time. It's called Kinesis.
"It's very cutting edge in the United States. There are very few clubs who have it, but the ones that do have it are doing great," said Jenny Peterson, personal trainer at ACAC.
Kinesis is the total body workout, strengthening all muscles--but focusing on the midsection.
"You feel some burn in a particular muscle group, but you are also having to use your core in order to maintain your balance since the machines are free motion and you have to use a lot of control," said Catherine Leiner.
The machines, or modules, use cables to make the whole body work as one unit. This is Leiner's first session of Kinesis and she says the class keeps her on her toes.
"You don't get bored. I mean the instructors are able to change the class each time so that there's not a lot of monotony with it that you might find with some other types of weight machines," said Leiner.
The women start at one station and stay there for a certain amount of time, not reps, and then move to the next.
"Kinesis burns about 30 percent more calories than traditional strength training, although we don't want to make people think that strengthen training isn't important. It is," Peterson said. "One of my clients described it as dynamic Pilates. So she feel really kind of integrated, but yet she's sweating like crazy at the end."
The class works for any athletic ability. In fact there is one session at ACAC devoted to back rehabilitation.
