Despite the heavy winds and rains, nearly one million Virginians took to the roadways heading for their holiday destinations.

"It's been pretty tough," said driver Katy Wetzel.

Tough was the name of the game for drivers hitting the highways heading to their holiday destinations. Heavy rains and howling winds caused an already heavy volume of traffic along Route 29 and Interstate 64 to move even slower.

"It seems like when it is raining, the traffic is a lot worse," said driver Sonny Lawrence.

Lawrence is heading to Manassas this Thanksgiving eve to visit family. He left Lynchburg and has hit traffic all along Route 29. He says a little patience is the key in these tough conditions.

"Most of our trip is done now. Basically, we are just ready to get up there so we can visit family. If it takes a little bit longer, it takes a little bit longer," he said.

"It's raining a lot but I just got my music in the car and some snacks and I will get there eventually," Wetzel said.

Wetzel is on break from Randolph Macon College and heading home to Philadelphia. She stopped at the Sheetz in Greene County to fill up her tank. She foresees a long trip ahead.

"I'll get there eventually and you know, it will be fine," she said.

And now that most of the pre Thanksgiving holiday travel is complete, VDOT is looking ahead to the weekend.

"Some people will leave and come home early so they can have some part of the weekend while other folks want to stay until the last minute. Sunday is particularly heavy all day long," said VDOT spokesperson Lou Hatter.

Despite all of the heavy volumes, no serious incidents were reported in our area. We got very lucky. Virginia State Police in Richmond say they responded to 92 accidents in an 18 hour span.
