It was beginning to look a lot like the holiday season on the downtown mall Friday night. That's when the the city lit up the community Christmas tree.
The festivities started around 4pm with holiday music by the Jefferson Chorus.
People were also encouraged to write their holiday wishes on the free expression wall on the east end of the mall.
There was also caroling and a candle light procession to the center of the mall where the tree stands.
A crowd of people gathered around the tree as they counted down to the light up.
The 'Grand Illumination' is a Charlottesville tradition that organizers say is even more special this year, as the community celebrates the 30th anniversary of the downtown mall.
