Thursday night was the kick off to the annual UVA Lighting on the Lawn celebration.
The event took the Class of 2007 Trustees over six months to plan.
The lights were strung and hung by the university Facilities Department.
"Most people think that it's a lot older than it actually
is. Its only about six years old and it was started as a
way to bring people together throughout the university
community on the lawn. It was supposed to be part of a
continuing series of events. But lighting of the lawn was
kind of the one that recurred every year. and so now we're
in the sixth annual of a tradition that a lot of people
have really come to enjoy in the fall semester," said A.J. Aronstein, Chairman of the Planning Committee.
Many of the university's most popular performing groups took the stage Thursday night.
The lawn will stay lit through the holidays and into the beginning of next year.
