Martha Jefferson boasted a new award on Wednesday, the hospital was given the prestigious Magnet Accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing center. The hospital is the first independent community hospital in the Commonwealth to receive the award. It is given to recognize the high standards of quality of care for patients as well as nursing leadership and professional models of care.

"One of the great things about Magnet is that they are looking for basically what are you doing now, this may have been what you were working on a year or two ago but I want to see that you're continuing to progress and continuing to raise the bar," Chief Nurse Executive Amy Black said.

For consumers, the Magnet Recognition Program provides a benchmark for the quality of care they can expect to receive.
