A brand new baseball field officially opened Saturday afternoon, and it was built was from the ground up. It's all in an effort to let more children have access to baseball, a local family's dream in honor of their son.
Saturday was the perfect day for a baseball game, especially as two local travel teams took the field to break it in.
"This area was actually a ditch leading into a quarry with some trees on it," said John Raymond, president of the Carson Raymond Foundation."After 16 months of working on it, we have a field ready to play just in time for spring, perfect time of year."
Raymond is the coach of an Albemarle County travel team, but he's also at the center of why this field was even built.
"The feeling I have today is gratitude for so many people supporting us. And a bit of sadness, because you're reminded of Carson and why we're all here," Raymond said.
His son, Steven "Carson" Raymond, died in 2009 from H1N1 complications at just 9 years old. His family continues to keep Carson and his love for baseball alive with the Carson Raymond Foundation and now the newest field at Stone Robinson Elementary School.
"The fact that we're letting more and more kids play baseball, I feel like the foundation is doing exactly what it set out to do and it makes me very proud," he said.
There was an official dedication of the field on Saturday before the game started and Raymond thanked the community and local businesses who, once again, made this all possible.
"We have such a great community and it shows how many people are willing to support you and help you achieve your dreams here."
The foundation's dream of letting more and more area children experience America's pastime and Carson's passion.
