The accident happened on Rt. 20, just south of Scottsville.
The call came in just before seven Monday morning for a single vehicle accident and when authorities arrived on the scene they found the vehicle over an embankment on fire.
“An off duty Albemarle officer was the first on the scene and when he arrived the vehicle was totally engulfed,” said Senior Trooper, Robert Haynes Jr.
We're told the driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Authorities aren't releasing the identity of the driver until they receive confirmation and notify the family.
The body will be taken to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
“We don't think the seat belt was being used at the time,” said Haynes.
State police are in charge of the investigation and they say they have interviewed one witness.
At this time it is unknown the cause of the accident. However, the weather could have played a role.
“With the roads being wet like this people need to slow down,” advised Haynes
Both lanes of traffic on route 20 were closed causing a delay, but the accident has been cleared up and traffic is moving through now.
