It’s been credited with saving 300 children since it was established in 1997, and this weekend marks the 10th year since the Amber Alert system was put in place.
Since its inception, Virginia’s system has been activated 14 times. Last year, it helped locate two missing Madison County children.
“Just the recovery and saving of one life is so important. And you think about the lives that have been lost and you wonder sometimes if we had this program back earlier how many lives could have been saved,” said Virginia State Police Sgt. Dave Cooper.
Saturday is the 11th anniversary of the abduction and murder of Amber Hagerman. The Arlington, Texas 9-year-old's death prompted the creation of the Amber Alert.
