The first-ever homeless soccer team in Charlottesville will load into vans Thursday and head to the nations capitol to compete in the Street Soccer USA Cup 2009.
The team was started by UVa students who volunteer at Hope Community Center. "The students saw the need and had the idea to give the people we serve a feeling a being on a team by starting the soccer team," said Joshua Bare, Director of Hope Community Center. "Hope is using soccer to inspire homeless people to put their feet in motion."
The team, called the Street Soccer CVL's, are sponsored by the Center. The group will load up and leave for 3 days of street soccer competition Thursday afternoon.
You can follow the teams action on their website. Just click on the link at the bottom of this page. If you're in Washington this weekend, the action takes place at Castle Stadium. A complete schedule is listed on Hope's website.
