Navy's Next Carrier Will Honor Ford

January 16, 2007

Navy officials say the name of their new carrier will be a tribute to the late President's love of the navy.

Ford served in the navy during World War II. He died in December at age 93.

Several lawmakers say Ford had intimate knowledge of the carriers and even helped save one in the Pacific.

The nearly 11 hundred foot long aircraft carrier, with a capacity for a crew of over four thousand, is the first in a new line of carriers and is expected to be commissioned in seven to eight years.

The carrier be built at Northrop Grumman's Newport News shipyard, the nation's only builder of nuclear power carriers.
