Former stray kittens and puppies across the Charlottesville area have a lot to purr and bark about.

One of their care-takers just received a national award for how she treats those animals.

Susanne Kogut of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA was named "Animal Shelter Director of the Year" for 2006.

Kogut was given the award by the "No Kill Advocacy Center" out of California.

She has been the SPCA's director for two years, and shares the award with her staff.

"I feel pretty honored. I really just feel proud of what we've done here at Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. You know, I am just one person among many who have helped us accomplish what we have done over the last couple years, but it's pretty incredible," said Susanne Kogut.

Kogut said she was surprised because she had no idea she was even being considered for the award which comes with $500 that goes towards the spay and neuter program.
