Today the Senate committee endorsed legislation that would ban smoking in most indoor workplaces.
The bill is sponsored by Roanoke Senator Brandon Bell. The Senate Education and Health Committee passed the measure to floor on a 9-5 vote.
Bell said that the bill is need to protect Virginians from the health hazards of second hand smoke. .
Opponents of the bill say that restaurants and other businesses should be able to establish their own smoking policies, based on customer demand.
Similar legislation passed in the Senate last year only to die in a House of Delegates subcommittee.
