These days a lot of people are working just to keep food on the table, but now one local woman is willingly throwing some of her groceries into the garbage.
Jessica Meehan is tossing most of her groceries and it's not because the items are old or moldy. Meehan says she's done her research and decided to change her diet and get rid of everything that contains corn.
"We have so much corn in America and it's just being stuck into everything we eat," said Meehan. "I don't think corn is bad. I love corn on the cob but i don't want it being snuck into all of my foods under crazy chemical names that i don't understand."
That's why she's been inspired to go a whole year without eating anything that contains corn and she has a feeling that it won't be easy.
"No Mexican, which is hard," said Meehan. " Even potato chips are off limits, but a lot of them are baked in corn oil. Sweets are really hard to do."
Along with this new diet she has also created a new blog to heighten awareness. Making her this weeks Blog of the week on CBS19 News at 6.
"I just hope that they can develop an awareness for the things that are in their food because we think a lot of time we are making the right decisions by buying whole wheat bread, but they are still a lot of hidden chemicals that we kinds of ignore," said Meehan. "It's nice to know what we're actually eating."
There may be fewer groceries in Meehan's kitchen, but she says at least now she knows what's in her pantry.
Marijean Jaggers joined us to talk more about Crown of Corn in this weeks blogging segment.
If you are wondering, Meehan didn't trash everything that contains corn. She gave some food away to friends and plans to donate some items to a local food bank.
