The first students to arrive for the fall semester at UVa on Tuesday were from 18 countries, including China, India and Botswana. They are eager to start exploring their new home at the University of Virginia.
The first bus arrived around noon, bringing students who had arrived in the U.S. from overseas. After the journey from Dulles Airport near Washington, DC, down 29 South to UVa, students were greeted by volunteers who helped them get situated. The bus riders are mainly first year students and transfers. But, some second year students served as bus captains to guide the new students.
"Today this morning we woke up quite early because we were so excited and also because of the jet lag," said Yujinh Han, a first year student.
George Wu had such a great experience on the UVa Express last year, he decided to serve as a bus captain this year.
"They're all very tired," said Wu. "This morning on the bus people were just talking and just can't wait to see all the buildings and everyone waiting there."
As part of the UVa Express experience, the students arriving had the chance to stay the night in Washington, before making the trek to Charlottesville.
UVa officials say the new students have a busy schedule the next couple of days. They will be attending orientation sessions, a welcome dinner and taking care of important tasks like getting cell phones.
UVa says they want to build a sense of community for these students before the school year begins.
