Easing Rt. 29 Traffic

Anyone who drives along Rt. 29 daily knows traffic is a major problem.

“We've got an awful lot of challenges facing the county and local government, and one of our biggest challenges is transportation, particularly since there's been a lack of funding from the state to help us with that,” said Ken Boyd, Albemarle County Board of Supervisor.

The bill proposed by Deeds and Toscano will offer Albemarle County and Charlottesville much needed help, by allowing money proffered by developers of Albemarle Place to be used outside the county.

“Where we needed it is in the city. Unfortunately, there was not enabling legislation for us to use proffers from a county in another jurisdiction without impacting their urban transportation dollars,” said Boyd.

The money will be used to add another lane on southbound 29, from Hydraulic Road to the bypasses of 29 and 250.

The idea stemmed from a city and county meeting with Toscano and Deeds where everyone agreed, fixing traffic in that one spot would benefit both localities.

“This is just one example of a simple little bill that builds some flexibility into the system that will allow one specific project to go forward. It may, hopefully, have statewide applications and allow other projects to go forward too,” said Senator Creigh Deeds.

Other projects not just in Charlottesville, but statewide, allowing many localities to work with one another.

Deeds added not addressing the traffic problems all over the state ultimately hurts Virginia’s economic prosperity.

Now Governor Kaine still has to sign the bill in order for it to become law.

The money from the developers of Albemarle Place is not enough to pay for the entire project, so both the city and county will have to come up with the remaining balance.
