Authorities in Fluvanna County have released the name of the man killed in Friday's bizarre ATV shooting. The deceased is 42-year-old Joseph Vincent Giebel of Country Lane in Troy, VA.
Police say on the evening of Friday, August 24, Giebel and another male were traveling in a Gator ATV near Giebel’s dwelling. There was a loaded .22 caliber rifle in the vehicle. For an unknown reason, the firearm discharged. The bullet exited the barrel and struck Giebel in the head. This caused the ATV to proceed forward and impact a tree, ejecting both occupants. As previously mentioned, the passenger was treated for a broken arm at UVA Medical Center.
It is believed that Giebel died instantly from the gunshot wound.
The investigation remains open and is pending the autopsy report and a forensic analysis of the firearm.
