You might have noticed a lot of people around town wearing red on Friday.

It’s all part of a new program aimed to provide awareness to a major health problem in America.

“More women, than men die from cardiovascular disease which is a surprise to many people,” Carol Keese, a spokesperson with the UVA Health System.

In fact every minute a woman in America dies of heart disease.

More startling, one in three American females will die of this serious medical condition.

But even with all this information available, only 55% of women know how to prevent the risks of this silent killer.

The UVA Health System sponsored a ‘Live Red Day’, promoting healthy heart habits for not only women, but the whole community.

“Heart disease affects every women, and you need to be able to identify your risk for heart disease by understanding certain lifestyle traits that might put you at risk for heart disease,” said Maureen Garmey, a Registered Nurse with the University Heart Center.

Some of those lifestyle traits are high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, family history, being over weight and being physically inactive.

Keese also said, “In addition to having a wear red day, spending time raising awareness, we're encouraging women to live red, to really make a commitment to 365 days a year, 24/7, to do something to make a commitment to herself and her own health and to take charge or her own health.”

Dawn Johnson is a long time health system employee who recently made the personal decision live red.

“Myself personally, I lost 22lbs, now a total of 25lbs, take initiative, be aware for yourself and your family and just do it, because you have to start today,” said Johnson.
