An explosion was reported in Buckingham County at around 11:00 Thursday morning. It happened at Giant Resource Recovery in the town of Arvonia off Route 652.

Authorities say about a five people were in the building at the time of the explosion. One employee was transported to the hospital by air. The employee is said to have non-life threatening injuries and was listed in fair condition Thursday night. One other employee sought treatment at an area clinic, but was said to be doing okay.

Fire crews from several departments worked to get the flames under control, but ultimately decided to let the fire burn itself out. Officials say the flames would likely burn throughout the night.

Representatives from the Department of Environmental Quality have tested the air and found no danger to the public, but advised residents living in the area to stay indoors.

Giant Resource Recovery is owned by Giant Cement Corporation. It is an Aerosol Destruction Plant.

A plant official says this is the first major incident at the plant since it opened six years ago.
