Prison Population Expected To Grow

February 14, 2007

The Pew Charitable Trusts conducted a private study and predict that in the next five years the prison population will increase gaining nearly two hundred thousand prisoners in the next five years.

The study predicts that the growth will be faster than the overall population growth in the U.S., costing states more than 27 billion dollars.

According to the study Florida is expected to add the most prisoners followed by California, Texas, Arizona, and Ohio.

Virginia is expected to add more than four thousand inmates, increasing the 37 thousand inmates the state already has to more than 41 thousand.

A Pew official says they hope states will use the information from the study to help them prepare for the future.
