Roadway conditions varied widely Wednesday night. Some of the worst were secondary roadways and side roads in the city.
For the most part, many of the major roadways were dry, with the exception of a few icy patches. And it was those icy patches that authorities said caused several accidents, including two along Route 33 in Greene and Orange counties.
That's where a pair of accidents within about a mile of each other knocked out power to home owners. Route 33 was closed for nearly two hours.
Crews worked even after the roadway reopened to fix the power problem.
In both accidents telephone poles were struck by vehicles. One of the poles was sliced in half.
Crews said 'black ice' likely caused the crashes.
Throughout the day VDOT officials warned drivers of the likely refreeze. The recommended that drivers use extra caution if traveling on area roadways Wednesday night.
