Virginia's wine community wants to share its best with the motherland with a project called, The Virginia Wine Experience in London.
Monday, 10 wine experts tasted 90 wines from over 30 area vineyards to determine which wines will represent the Commonwealth at a historic wine tasting in London.
The theme of the project, "Virginia, First in Wine," aims to highlight both the history and quality of Virginia's wine, while coinciding with the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.
"We were the first of the colonies to consciously set up to build a commercial wine industry and they kept at it for centuries," explained Executive Director Richard Leahy. "And there were various problems and setbacks, but now, we are able to show these wines on the world stage and we feel like they are worthy of being compared to the fine wines of any other wine region."
The winning selections will go to London in May and will be announced this Wednesday.
