Celebrating Constitution Day at Montpelier

September 17, 2009

A special celebration was held Thursday for the framework of the American government. James Madison's Montpelier celebrated Constitution Day.

Lynn Cheney, the wife of former Vice-President Dick Cheney, served as the keynote speaker.

The events centered on teaching children about the Constitution and its importance.

Delegates at the constitutional convention signed the famous document 222 years ago.

"I feel like I'm participating in my county's history, and just trying to perpetuate some of its tradition," says Donni Long, a Charlottesville resident and participant in the celebration.

"This is a very important day for this country and I think without the constitution we wouldn't be any better than the third world countries," says Larry Corbin, who lives in Culpeper.

Before becoming president, James Madison helped get the states to ratify the Constitution, giving him the title "Father of the Constitution."
