5K Benefits Hospice of the Piedmont

May 11, 2013

Hundreds of people participated in the 12th annual "Run and Remember 5K" Saturday morning at the Keswick Club. The race benefits the Hospice of the Piedmont. The Charlottesville non-profit helps local families during the last months of a loved one's life.

This year, more than 230 people registered for the race. That's nearly double the number of people who signed up last year.

"The community really stands behind hospice because of the kind of work they do. They do such a good job. They're such caring people," said Melba Campbell, the 5K's committee chair.

The money raised from the event will help Hospice of the Piedmont care for the terminally ill and offer support programs for community members who are coping with the death of a loved one. Campbell says the organization spends about $350,000 each year to aid families who cannot afford the care they need.

"Hospice came in when my parents passed away 10 years ago, and it helped a lot," said Tony Franklin, who placed fifth overall at the race. "That's why I loved the run. It brings back memories, but it helps for a good cause."

Runners also planted a pinwheel flower garden in memory of their loved ones.

Each year, the 5K is hosted in memory of late Keswick resident Sally Carle.

"Sally was a dear lady that was loved by everyone in Keswick, and so we have continued the tradition," said Campbell.
