Hundreds of runners took to the pavement Saturday morning for the fifth-annual Freedom 5K. The race honors soldiers wounded while serving the country.

Nearly 300 people raced around Old Trail Village in Crozet. Runners even held flags to symbolize freedom and to honor the troops.

The run benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships to the families of the fallen and wounded. The co-founder of the organization is a retired army veteran, who was also wounded while in battle.

"It's so humbling and honorable to do this and this community rallying around the cause of freedom," says Maj. Ed Pulido. "On this day people could be at home doing other things, but they're going to run for the troops, they're going to run for the families and certainly we're running for America."

Pulido received a purple heart after he lost his leg while serving.

The Folds of Honor Foundation provided more than 5,400 scholarships to families around the Nation.
