On Thursday the commonwealth announced it was banning the sale and auction of all horses in the state until at least Monday.

The decision came after a strain of Equine Herpes was found in several animals in northern Virginia.

The Agricultural Board of Virginia advised horse owners to use extra caution when handling the animals.

The virus cannot infect people, but humans can spread it between animals if they're not careful.

"it is a neurological strain and it's particularly feared among horse owners because of the high death toll resulting, so we're trying to get a handle on the spread," explained Kelly B. Shott, the owner of KBS Instruction and Handling in Albemarle County. These strains of herpes virus are not contagious to human beings."

As of Thursday, no animals in the Charlottesville are had tested positive for the virus.
