Campus Fire Dangers

March 5, 2007

“You have a large number of folks with a diverse back ground coming together for a short period of time,” said James Barber, Albemarle County Fire Marshal. “A lot of times folks are younger and away from home for the first time.”

This weekend's fire in Farmville makes this the deadliest academic year since 2000, with a total of eighteen campus-involved fire fatalities.

Barber added the biggest cause of accidental campus fires is cooking, followed by smoking materials and said students need to be alert of their surroundings.

Parents can help by reminding their student to change the batteries in their smoke detector and create an escape route when the student moves in.
