The Albemarle County Fire Department is joining forces with the International Association of Fire Chiefs to get the message out on fire prevention.

The department is raising awareness on the high number of deaths from fires inside homes nation-wide. While the county's numbers remain very low, the fire marshal said this type of awareness is needed.

"We have seen at least three instances where home owners have been alerted by smoke detectors that have been properly operating, so with the time-change coming up we just want to stress the importance again of having a working smoke detector," said Albemarle County Fire Marshal James Barber.

In addition to installing smoke detectors in your home, Barber encourages everyone to have an escape plan for the entire family.
