Kaine To Amend Transportation Plan

March 12, 2007

Following trips around the state last week to find out how local elected officials felt about the transportation bill, Kaine said Monday that city and county officials are not urging him to sign the General Assembly's legislation.

Kaine addressed the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce saying that officials in northern Virginia and Hampton Roads want to see the state kick in more money.

According to Kaine the biggest problems that these regions have with the proposed bill is the commercial real estate tax. He says that local officials feel the raise in commercial real estate taxes would put their own regions' economic development at risk if they imposed the taxes.

Kaine says he will substantially amend the bill by the March 26th deadline but that he will try and compromise with the House and Senate in order to get a deal done.
