The proposed 2008 budget is for 123 million dollars. It includes several spending increases including a 13 percent increase for city schools, and nearly $3.5 million for affordable housing..
City council would like to put $850 thousand in place for cameras and computers in police cars. The plan keeps the current tax rate at the same level of 99 cents.
There is $ 7.8 million left over from last year. The city manager wants to invest that money into the capital improvements portion of the budget. City councilor Julian Taliafero says that the issue of affordable housing is one of the biggest.
"The real goal is to allow people that work in the city, service jobs, teachers, etc to live in the city" said Taliafero.
Also on the schedule tonight is talk about a highway safety grant, a gang prevention grant, and renovations for McGuffy park. The meeting starts at 7 pm Monday night.
