A resident of the Jefferson Heights Assisted Living Complex on Pantops Mountain is to thank for alerting authorities to an early morning fire in the facility. The resident called 911 shortly before 5 a.m. after water could be heard leaking into a lower apartment.
The water was coming from an activated sprinkler system, set off by a fire in the attic. In all, 56 units had to be evacuated. Those displaced were taken to nearby Westminster Canterbury for evaluation.
A third alarm was called on this fire because of the complexities surrounding the evacuation as many residents were in wheelchairs.
Units responded from the Albemarle County Fire and Rescue Department, East Rivanna, Charlottesville, Monticello, Stony Point, Seminole Trail, Scottsville and the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad.
