The Charlottesville Derby Dames took on the Northside Stranglers at Expoland Sunday. There isn't a roller skating rink in Charlottesville, so the Derby Dames skate at Expoland in Fishersville. They had a huge crowd out there to support them.
"I am so excited," said skater Lex Gibson. "It's such a great turn out. I love the halftime show. Charlottesville is rockin' it!"
The President of the Derby Dames, Reagan Greenfield, says watching and taking part in roller derby is like no other sport.
"It's a wonderful combination of theatrics and athleticism," said Greenfield.
For two years the Derby Dames have been working hard to find a rink to call home. Sunday was their first home bout ever.
"We're really excited to show Charlottesville what we've been working on for two years," said Greenfield. "I think people have been hearing about us, but, they haven't seen us out there doing what it is that we love to do."
The Derby Dames beat the Stranglers 136 to 72 Sunday. They tell the Newsplex their season is just ending. But, next season will be starting up again in February.
