Four-year-old Jesse Jones IV is in critical condition. He was hit Monday night in front of his home on Dice Street in Charlottesville. Police say the accident is still an ongoing investigation.

As the family of Jesse Jones IV hopes for his recovery, they try to understand what happened Monday night and what could have prevented the young boy from getting hit.

"I think it needs a lot of speed bumps to protect the kids" said Jesse Jones, victim's grandfather.

Jesse Jones, the boy's grandfather, was at home today with the other family children on the 400 block of Dice Street.

"It's kinda rough but I guess we're holding it together, praying for him everyday and I hope he can get better and come home" said Jones.

Police say the driver of a red GMC Jimmy was driving up Dice Street when little Jesse was hit. It's a scenario, officers say, that is unfortunate and can happen all too easily when kids are at play.

"Kids don't make the conscience decision that adults make, and drivers need to be aware that kids may dart out in the street unaware of what the dangers are" said Lieutenant Gary Pleasants, Charlottesville Police.

That's what the family of Jesse says they believe happened.

"He was jumping up and down in the street and that's why the car hit him" said one child.

As police continue their investigation "baby j" as the family refers to him will continue to be the center of his families thoughts.

"I just hope he gets better, we want him to come home., that's what we want" said Jones.

The last fatal pedestrian accident in Charlottesville was two years ago.
