A consultant study that began last September has recommended against the merging of the Albemarle County and Charlottesville Fire Departments.
The consultant, Matrix Consulting Group, said that the consolidation of the departments would lead to additional costs rather than savings because of increased wage and benefit costs and an inability to reduce personnel needs through the merger.
The study said that merging the departments would also offer minimal opportunities to reduce staff levels. But despite recommending against merging the study did recommend that the departments continue to work together to coordinates services and shared sources.
