SALUDA, Va. (AP) - Federal authorities say seven people have been charged in an alleged synthetic marijuana conspiracy in Middlesex County.

Three of the defendants also are charged with maintaining drug-involved premise for the Slipknots Trading & Tobacco stores in Topping and Tappahannock.

According to an indictment, the defendants conspired to distribute synthetic cannabinoids from May 14, 2012, until this month. Three of them owned the tobacco stores that sold the synthetics, commonly referred to as "Spice," as well as water pipes and rolling papers.

Authorities allege the stores sold more than $3 million of the synthetic products over a year-and-a-half.
