Parrotheads, the nickname for Buffett fans, take tailgating to another level. Grilled shrimp kabob's, floral shirts, and giant shark fins strapped on the top of their SUV's.
The estimated 12,000 fans attending the Jimmy Buffett concert at John Paul Jones Arena Tuesday night included many from out of town. At first glance, they're expert partyers and their average age is around 40.
Parrothead is a loving nickname for die-hard Jimmy Buffett fans. Despite their love for tropical alcoholic drinks, they're harmless, and quite unique.
Daaave Summers spells his name with three A's. He says alcohol is just something that goes along with the vibe of Buffett music. In fact, Buffett was made famous with his hit "Margaritaville" in the mid-70's. The song still plays regularly on many mainstream radio stations around the country.
Police presence in and around the event Tuesday was set at 37 officers from the four local police agencies including UVa, a typical number for an event of that nature.
When the concert wrapped up shortly after 10pm, police reported an estimated 10 arrests, mainly for public intoxication.

I agree that the concert was awesome Jimmy will never change, I've been a fan for 20 plus years, many people at the concert were well over 50, it was the 20 somethings that were drunk from the margarita's that kept sticking there butts in the back of my head and spilling their drinks all over the place that made it unenjoyable and who ever heard of not being able to drink bottled water from a bottle, they had to pour it in a cup no ice no lid no straw allowed, (talk about wasteful) not JPJ rules Jimmy's rules. It's considered a projectile, what about those 2 foot margarita glasses, they were going all over the place. they would not even sell non-alcoholic ones. Their should have been way more then 10 arrest for drunk in public, unless you are talking about the people sitting in 109 R
Although a smaller venue than most of the places Jimmy Buffett plays, the John Paul Jones Arena turned out to be quite nice. The parrotheads were well behaved and of course JB put on a heck of a show! We'll be back next time!!
