Governor Kaine Declares State Of Emergency

April 16, 2007

Governor Kaine has declared a State of Emergency in response to the shootings at Virginia Tech, directing all state agencies to take any necessary actions to aid in the response and recovery following Monday's shooting.

The emergency declaration allows the Governor to immediately deploy state personnel, equipment and other resources, and to coordinate state and local response in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy.

The Virginia State Police are on the scene working with local law enforcement to investigate the shootings. The Department of Health has sent the chief medical examiner along with other personnel to help assist with the fatalities.

The governor has also ordered the lowering of the Virginia State flag in honor of those who were killed or injured at the shooting.
